TRIBUTES have been paid to a “selfless and caring” teenager who died after being hit by a train at a railway crossing.

Eighteen-year-old William Brutnell, from Christchurch, was tragically killed on Monday evening at Junction Road, Totton, shortly before 9pm.

His sister Amy confirmed the sad news on Facebook, thanking friends for their support and good wishes. Her most recent post stated that she was “forever proud of our Will”.

Will had been a former student of Brockenhurst College student and of Highcliffe School.

He was a keen musician and his friends said they would remember him for his happy, fun-loving nature and sense of humour.

One tribute on Facebook said: “Rest in peace Will Brutnell, will always remember the times we shared through school and how you always had a smile on your face no matter what the day was like. You will be missed dearly.”

Another friend said: “You’re an awesome lad, always a good lad, selfless and caring.”

And a third added: “Nobody deserves a world without music as brilliant as yours.

“I lost a true friend this week and it won’t be long until we get to see your face again.

“You are a brilliant, hilarious and wacky guy. We are all so proud of you and how you were doing with your career.”

Di Roberts, principal of Brockenhurst College, said: “Our thoughts are with Will’s family at this difficult time. All of our students, past and present, play such an important role in the Brock community and we are so sad to hear of this tragic incident.

“We will remember him with respect for his achievements during his time with us.”

British Transport Police is investigating the incident, which involved a passenger train travelling from Banbury to Bournemouth, and is asking for anyone with information to contact them by calling 0800 405040.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious but a file has been passed to the coroner.
