A FORMAL consultation on the controversial plans for Christchurch town strategy will take place later this year.

The transformation scheme drawn up by London-based consultants Barr Gazetas was put out to the public last year, with a mixed response to plans to create a ‘heritage triangle’ linking historic sites such as the Priory, Castle ruins and Constable’s House.

Ideas also included major changes to the Fountain roundabout and High Street as well as proposals for free wifi in the town centre, improved shop fronts and new street furniture.

There was also a suggestion to make the road level with the pavement at the Mayor’s Parlour and possibly outside the Regent Centre, while creating a ‘heritage piazza’ outside the King’s Hotel.

But with potential housing sites listed as Waitrose car park, Millhams corner, Bank Close and Wick Lane, concerns were raised at the prospect of sections of town centre car parks being sold off to fund the major initiative.

Concerns were also raised at the short time period residents had to respond to the key scheme.

But Christchurch council said the chance to comment was not an official consultation period, but “an indication of some of the ideas being considered”.

Feedback from the initial ‘consultation’ is being looked at to complete a draft document which will go out to the public for their views this year.

Economy portfolio holder Cllr Claire Bath said: “I am really pleased that so many people took the time to go online or visit the exhibitions and give us their views and suggestions.

“This has been fed back to the consultants in order to help them refine some of their ideas and examine suggestions not previously considered.”

The draft will be presented to the community services committee, along with a proposal to establish a group made up of key community representatives.

Cllr Bath added: “Our aim is to continue to engage locally on the priorities for the strategy and deliver improvements which help create a more prosperous and sustainable future for the town.”
