IT was a welcome return to Druitt Hall for members of a WI group in Christchurch.

The Christchurch Central WI returned to their original meeting place at Druitt Hall earlier this month after a change of venue.

The group, who used to meet at Christchurch Baptist Church hall, held their first ever meeting at Druitt Hall when they formed in 1986.

Two members of the Wimborne Militia, Mike Drewson and Mel Gudger, were also present to add a sense of ceremony to the occasion.

And a bouquet was presented to Joan Witt, one of the original members, who still attends all the monthly meetings.

Penny Drewson, WI member said the group raised a glass to Druitt Hall during a member’s birthday toast.

They also heard a talk from local historian Mike Andrews, who spoke about the Lost Buildings of Christchurch.

“This was somewhat apt as the group had nearly lost Druitt Hall”, Penny said.

“We all agreed that the return to the Druitt Hall had been a great success, and look forward to many more happy and busy meetings.”

The hall reopened in September following a long-running campaign to save it.

The fight began in 2011 after the council’s leader, Cllr Ray Nottage, advocated its closure.

However, after years of wrangling between the council and residents, Christchurch Citizens Association was awarded a three-year lease to keep the venue going.

Refurbishment work on the building was carried out during the summer.
