A DATE has been set for the launch of the newly refurbished Druitt Hall in Christchurch.

The opening of the hall will take place on Saturday, September 13, in a bid to mark the special occasion following years of wrangling over its future.

The fifties-themed vintage-style community tea party will be held from 11.30am to 4pm with music, entertainment and activities.

The Bluestockings group will perform at noon just before the official opening of the hall by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Denise Jones.

Organisers have promised lashings of traditional homemade cakes and refreshments at vintage prices.

And for those who fancy practising their hand at a spot of baking, there will also be a bake-off competition.

The judging for the contest will take place at 1.30pm and all entries will be raffled.

Poole Bay Classics will also be showing off 1950s cars and a grand raffle, juggler and prize for best dressed in fifties style will also be up for grabs.

Entry is free but donations are welcome for the continued development of the hall.

The event comes after the facility was taken on Christchurch Citizens Association after years of uncertainty.

Speaking earlier this year, chairman, Nigel Cook said he was keen to return the space to its former glory.

“Our objective is to find a balance between community groups and groups that will help support the running of the hall which will be more commercial”, he added.

Support from the public will be essential to ensure the hall survives, he said, but he is confident there is an appetite in the town to make it work.

Recent work includes the installation of a new disabled toilet and upgrade of the existing facilities.
