ANYONE wishing for an exotic summer holiday in Thailand had only to visit Dorset at the weekend.

For the Amazing Thailand Christchurch Festival, which took place on both Saturday and Sunday, brought south east Asia to the Quomps.

And with beaming sunshine overhead, delicious food to sample and amazing displays to watch, there was something for all to enjoy.

Kam Grernsranoi, who was one of the event’s organisers, said: “There were so many things going on.

“We had Thai cooking displays, a Thai boxing show, a beauty pageant and more. Lots of restaurants from Bournemouth and Boscombe were also here selling their food and we had funfair rides for children too.”

She said the aim of the event was to “bring Thailand to England”.

“We want to share our culture with everyone here,” she said.

Sarah Jelfs, of Christchurch, was showing her friend’s grandchildren, two-year-old twins Miya and Leo Bergin, around the event.

She said: “We’re very pleased to be here.

“It’s a beautiful day for it. I must say, we didn’t really know that much about it before we came along, but I hope that perhaps next year it’s better advertised so everyone can enjoy the day.”

Marty and Janet Martindale, who live in Christchurch, are regular visitors to Thailand and often to return to city Chiang Mai.

Mrs Martindale said: “We’re having a very nice look around today.

“I think this is the perfect place for an event like this – there are lots of things to do.”

The couple said they choose to visit Thailand for the food, people and culture.

“We actually didn’t know this event was on, but a friend called to tell us, and we’re glad that we came along,” Mr Martindale said.

Lynette Green, of Ringwood, visited with her daughter Jenny, 20.

She said: “We’ve tried some of the food, which was lovely and we’re looking forward to the display of traditional Thai boxing very much.”
