ROADWORKS that have been causing disruption on Bournemouth’s Wessex Way are set to overrun well into the new year.

The bridge maintenance works over Bournemouth railway station began in September and were scheduled to finish last week, but the estimated completion date has now been pushed back to January 24.

Bournemouth council insists the freezing weather is responsible for the delays. But with the cold snap forecast to continue, there could yet be further hold-ups, which could mean more frustrating delays for motorists – into February or beyond.

Ian Kalra, the council’s transportation services manager, said: “Unfortunately the recent severe icy weather has led to a delay in completing the roadworks on the Wessex Way. This means the roadworks will undoubtedly continue into January.

“This is not ideal but we are working hard to ensure these works are completed as quickly as possible and disruption is kept to an absolute minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause drivers.”

The roadworks have seen the 50mph speed limit reduced to 30mph and the carriageways narrowed on the approach to St Paul’s roundabout.

Work has caused rush-hour queues in both directions and heavy congestion on the other approaches to the busy roundabout.

When the work began back in September, drivers complained of the lack of signage regarding which lane to be in.

The work, which was initially scheduled for 12 weeks, involves installation of a new waterproof surface and draining system.
