BOURNEMOUTH will have hundreds of councillors today – but no council leader.
As councillors from all over the country descend on the resort for the Local Government Association annual conference, they will find themselves in to a town whose own council affairs have recently been little short of chaotic.
The imminent arrival of the Conservatives’ communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles is thought to have been one reason for the rapid moves to oust Bournemouth’s former council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin from his post last week. He had already been facing calls to quit over the prospect of a public hearing into adult websites viewed on his council laptop.
With Cllr MacLoughlin standing down, his deputy Cllr John Beesley was put under pressure to follow suit – not least from Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood. Cllr Beesley has so far refused to oblige. He faces an investigation by the council’s standards board into an opposition councillor’s complaints about his friendship with a planning consultant.
While the Tory party is facing what Harold Macmillan might have called “a little local difficulty” over these issues, the LGA conference has weighty matters to deal with.
This is the Conservative-dominated organisation’s first conference since the general election. In other times the atmosphere might be celebratory, but delegates will be keenly aware of hard times ahead in the public sector.
They will discuss licensing laws, housing, merging services and supporting small businesses through recession. As well as Mr Pickles, the speakers will include climate change secretary Chris Huhne, Labour’s shadow local government secretary John Denham and West Ham FC vice-chair Karen Brady.

Last few months people have been clamoring for the council leader to resign. Now he has resigned the news is 'we have no leader'. Can't we let them alone to sort out their sticky situation.

You get comments that say get rid of the lot of them, but that could only be done in May 2011, and only if the people of Bournemouth want to unload the council. Between now and then the council needs a leader; there must be a few out of their 40 folk up to the task. Does anyone have a local councillor they would like to suggest?
