THE Cherries are marking their promotion to League One by hosting one of the biggest charity football events in the South West.
The charity event, expected to draw a sell-out crowd to Dean Court on Sunday, July 18, will see the AFCB Legends team take on a celebrity squad.
There will also be a host of other attractions inside and outside the ground.
AFC Bournemouth says the line-up will include two number one selling pop artists, several top sports stars and celebrities from rugby, boxing, football and film.
A significant proportion of the money raised will go to Julia’s House, Poole’s hospice for children, and to the Youth Cancer Trust.
Already this year, the club has helped raise money for a respite care facility at Julia’s House. The facility opened on the last day of the football season.
Adam Murry, director of operations at the club, said: “During the course of the season, AFCB significantly raised its profile in the community following various Cherries charity initiatives – including the Pyjama Appeal for Julia’s House, monies raised for the Youth Cancer Trust, food bank appeals that amassed over a ton of food for those in need, and Waggy Tails.
“It is important for us as a club to integrate ourselves into the community and use the facilities that we have to help raise awareness for local charities as part of our obligation to the community. As a club we are proud of our achievements during season 2009-10 and intend to not only continue but expand upon the Cherries’ charity initiatives during the season 2010-11.
“I am encouraging everyone to come along and have a great day.”
Children from Julia’s House will be at the game, along with guests from the Youth Cancer Trust.
July 18 will also feature a “sports and fun carnival” around the ground, with bouncy castles, climbing wall, fast furious football, power strike, pony rides, assault course, fashion shows and more. AFC Bournemouth players will be mixing with the visitors and the day will finish with an evening gala dinner with live music and celebrity speakers.
Victoria Cross hero Johnson Beharry will present some of the prizes.
Mr Murry thanked Louise Hall from Brockenhurst College for her help organising the event and all the companies who have donated prizes and services.
