Vulcan XH558 under threat as Sky Trust announces lack of funds

THE future of the historic Vulcan XH558 is under threat after the Vulcan to the Sky Trust announced that its funds are in a “precarious position”.

The trust took the decision to place its employees on one month’s notice as of February 1 and the project could close down on February 28 grounding the iconic craft.

It is now making a last ditch effort to keep the Vulcan in the skies by asking for pledges for donations which can be honoured once targets have been met.

With under £200,000 raised since November against a goal of £800,000, the trust needs to raise more than £300,000 in new pledges by the end of February to justify a stay of execution followed by a further £300,000 in pledges by the end of March.

The trust has been in a similar position before but the Vulcan was saved after its loyal supporters rallied to the cause.

Spokesman, Richard Clarke, said: “If the money isn’t forthcoming and the project is closed at the end of the month that puts the future of the aircraft in huge doubt.

“What will happen to be quite honest we don’t know but we hope we will get the money and continue operating.”

Jon Weaver, air festival director, at Bournemouth council, urged everyone to do what they could to save the XH558.

He said: “We, with the trust, are equally as determined not to give in and want to help in anyway we can to encourage people to pledge to the fund.

“The aircraft is an important element to the Festival and we have included the appeal on bournemouthair.co.uk.

The Vulcan in action at the Bournemouth Air Festival 2009

“Without a doubt, last year, the iconic Vulcan effect took over Bournemouth and we are hopeful she will fly again at the UK’s leading aviation event this summer.”

The trust is organising a world record attempt for the most number of signatures on a single birthday card to commemorate XH558’s 50 birthday since her first flight on May 25 1960.

It is also planning to promote the appeal through a viral campaign.

• For more information or to make a pledge visit vulcantothesky.org or ring the trust office on 01455 637864.

Fact file

• The Avro Vulcan was designed in the late 1940s to carry the British atomic bomb by the same team that built the famous Avro Lancaster.

• Just 11 years separated the first flight of the revolutionary Vulcan in 1952 from the first flight of the Lancaster in 1941.

• The Vulcan is a stunning example of the best of British engineering.

• Vulcan XH558 is the only flying Vulcan in the world.

• The RAF’s V-Force helped protect world peace during the bleak and dangerous years of the Cold War.

• Grounded by the RAF in 1993, the effort to return her to flight was started in 1997.

• More than £7 million was needed to complete the restoration of which £2.7 million came from the UK Heritage Lottery Fund who realised the historical importance of the Vulcan to the nation.

Firstly, why does the Daily Echo consistently add another story about certain topics, but at the same time remove the comments and responses to the previous story. On the original story regarding the Vulcan was com valid comments and ideas regarding the raising of money, which have now gone. Is it too much to ask the Daily Echo why can they not transfer the comments over, or at least give a link to a previous story regarding the same. Or it could be that a few mentioned the many millions the council got from the last Air Show, which it was recommended that some be given to the Vulcan Fund, as this was part of the reason why so much money was raised. Finally if we want to see these historic aircraft, it is only fair that those who make money form such shows, should in this case make a contribution. Without the historic aircraft, we do not have the Air Shows we would like.

@SonofKinson We haven't removed the original story. If you click the link above where it says 'more of your comments on the vulcan' you will be able to view yesterday's story and comments. This newer story was uploaded as it goes into more detail than the previous story did.

It is perhaps fitting that in its 50th Anniversary Year, it seems that the Vulcan will not be present at this year's Bournemouth Airshow that will mark the 100th Anniversary of the death of aircraft pioneer Charles Rolls at the 1910 Bournemouth Airshow!

Very well said!! I agree with every word :)

Just a thought though, those who pledge money to save the Vulcan, what happens if it's not enough? Where will the funds go?

I maybe wrong, a pledge is whereby the money is only taken if they reach the target they need. I am not sure. If they did have money, I would imagine they would pass it on to another organisation doing the same.

Since the show allegedly makes £30m, can't the council justify a substantial contribution as the Vulcan is the main reason many visitors come to the air festival. Surely the money generated by these people for the town would more than cover a decent contribution?

For Sarah Cartlidge. When I read the story on this page, I am sure the link was not there, as I would have referred to it. If that is the case, my apologies.

Pledges are a promise to make payment if the target is reached. If there is no reasonable possibility of the target being met, then the pledges will not be called in. So anyone who pledges will not actually part with any money unless it can be used towards keeping XH558 flying.

I can not see how people imagine the council makes 30 million pounds out of the Airshow , what it does do is to put a million or so into the local enconmy of which some filters through to them .

Have the actual income and expenditure sheets ever been published for 2 previous shows

It would be a shame for this aircraft to be grounded due to lack of funds, especially when the Lancaster & Spitfire etc are kept airborne by Govt/military funding.
Although I agree they have a larger niche in history than the Vulcan, it's still well worth keeping airworthy.
Couldn't some funding be provided by the state? Or the lottery?

Ask the people living in the Falklands if the Vulcan is worth saving!

Whats that got to do with it. Did the Vulcan injure or kill anyone from the Falkland Islands, NO, however, it did stop the use of the airport by the Argentinians, which was the objective. This aircraft was a valuable deterrent for this country, and did want it was suppose to do.

Wish I had 300 grand. The vulcan is so necessary, we need it to remind us and educate young people about the real and recent horror of war. Imagine if you saw that thing flying towards you to drop bombs. It is utterly terrifying and symbolic of the need for peace. Also, the noise it makes is truly amazing and beats eurofighter hands down considering how old it is.

558 has already had lottery funding.
People can still help save this iconic aircraft via moblile phone.
Simply text vulcan to 82055 for a fixed £3 donation.

or make a pledge here : http://www.site.vulc
antothesky.org/pledg
e.asp

No matter how big or small your donation is... it will be greatly appreciated - and may be the deciding factor in whether Vulcan graces our skies again this summer !

To everyone who saw 558 and witnessed the 'Vulcan effect' last year... please donate as a way of a Thank You.

Without 558 - this years Air Festival may not be as loud as last years and the crowd numbers well down in numbers.
