Bournemouth's Yellow Buses could be owned by French transport group

FOUR years after the multi-million-pound sale of Bournemouth’s Yellow Buses, ownership of the company could change once more, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Staff have been briefed on the possibility of major French transport group RATP, which owns a 25.6 per cent shareholding in Transdev, taking full ownership of the company, which has been serving Bournemouth for more than a century.

Each year Yellow Buses carries more than 13 million passengers on its 115-strong fleet, clocking up more than five million miles across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.

Derek Lott, Yellow Buses’ managing director, said the change in ownership was “dependent on a planned merger between Transdev and Veolia Transport, which is subject to final agreement between the two companies and also approval by the regulatory authorities.”

He stressed that there were no plans to change the distinctive colour of the fleet, adding: “Yellow Buses is a very strong brand and we are not aware of any proposal to change it.”

Yellow Buses, which currently employs 340 staff and was named Shire Operator of the Year at last year’s UK Bus Awards, was sold by Bournemouth council to Transdev in December 2005. The council retained a ten per cent stake in the business.

The new owners agreed to preserve key community routes and protect the terms and conditions of employment for staff.

At the time Transdev chief executive Francois-Xavier Perin said: “We are committed to enhancing and modernising the bus service for the benefit of residents and visitors.”

Both Transdev and Veolia are French companies.

Mildly interesting story, but these haven't really been Bournemouth's "Yellow Buses" for ages. As long as the services and employment are maintained, who cares who owns the fleet?

Let's hope the potential new owners are 'streetwise' and know how to keep Wilts & Dorset on their toes.

Being a two major operator town is good for travellers and keeps fares down and both operators sharp. A monopoly operator would undoubtedly mean increased fares and possibly even more route reductions.

I'm willing to bet that within 6 months of them being sold, some routes will be cut out, others trimmed down, prices "readjusted to market conditions" There will be "reallocation of resources" which will claim that we will all be better off. The main routes will get more buses, the less frequent ones will take the brunt of the cuts. Oh I am sure we will get lots of promises about routes and costs, but as has been seen in the past, those words aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Yellowbuses do not provide a service, they run a business. They have no concern about customers, just profits.

That would explain why many of the drivers have been so pi**y the past few days.

As a regular user, I'd already started looking at alternatives.

The driver shouldn't be so pi**y, they should be grateful that they have a job especially in a bleak time like this...

The British have been letting supposedly 'foriegn' companies take over their vital industries for a very long time now,I would thought you were used to it by now.Perhaps instead of making inappropiate racist remarks like Mr Marsh's above the people of Poole and Bournemouth might just get,at last,a company that can run public transport like it should be run.Its not just my opinion, many others would agree that the French run their public transport a **** site better than the British do.If when in France or Northern Europe as a whole they had actually used public transport or at least noticed it then they would realise that the system there is a source of national pride. There was a time when the British had national pride in its institutions that actually worked,at least then they had a reason to beat their chest's about being British.I for one would love to come back to Poole and use the bus system instead of a car or taxi, but who can afford it or put up with the service. At most times of the day the only passengers I can see are the ones that get a free pass or the bus is moreorless empty.I've been charged over a pound to go one stop before,no wonder these buses are empty and no wonder they have to be subsidised out of your taxes.I always look forward to reading in these comment columns practical and lucid solutions to the problems of living in my hometown which I honestly appreciate. But as an expat what really grates is the dribble and inane comments from supposedly grown up readers that have no logical imput into the issues at hand.Especially from readers that no longer live in the area and that in a weird way vicariously live their lives like they still lived in the Echo demographic area.I've lived on the Sunshine Coast Mr.Marsh, there is no public transport to speak of,so comments about past conflicts in this sort of debate is just stirring the pot.Which from your distance I would say is completely useless and sad,if you care so much why dont you go back to wherever it is in the East Dorset area you come from and try and live there.See how far you get by being so smug as you usually do if your comments in this forum are anything to go by,get over it,you should be glad you live in such a beautiful place, say something useful or stay out of it.

"No vested interest".
Your mother must be so proud!
As you have lived on the Sunshine Coast you may have noticed that no-one wanted to give you a free ride!
You obviously did not look too hard as their is a more than adequate bus service there.
Maybe you expected people with "foriegn" accents to carry you?
As for "racist" remarks, a tongue-in-cheek crack about the people who quoted "Vive Quebec Libre" deserves every inch that is quoted.
As for saying something useful, all that you have said in your "enlightened" comment is that the people across the channel do things better than the locals.
Who is the "sad" one?
