‘Problem people’ fears over plan for Bournemouth's former arts centre

A STORM has broken out after Bournemouth council announced plans for a “children and families” centre in the former Bournemouth Centre for Community Arts building.

The council’s cabinet will be asked on July 22 to approve plans for the “services hub” to also include “adult focused” services.

But Boscombe Traders Association fears the centre will cater for “people with problems”.

And the move has come as a shock to the Friends of BCCA, which has fought to turn the building into a community centre offering a young people’s theatre group, film club and dance, pottery, wood and metal workshops.

The council won a £2.3m government grant for a new base for a multi-agency team which supports children, young people and families, which has been temporarily based at Kings Park Primary School for two years. The facility which it now hopes to base in the former BCCA building would also include some services for adults.

The council has been working with Bournemouth and Poole Community Health Services, Dorset Police’s Safe School Partnership, voluntary sector services and probation services on the scheme.

The Friends of BCCA have put in a Freedom of Information request for details of the bid and is awaiting a response.

Cllr John Beesley, deputy leader of the council, said the council had been working “very closely” with the Friends and hoped to help them find “an alternative option” for a community centre.

He declined to comment on whether offenders on probation or drug addicts would regularly visit the centre being planned.

He added: “I think it is too early to be making these comments. There are details that have yet to be finalised.”

Katherine Edgar from BCCA Friends said the group did not wish to comment yet.

Steve Kent, chairman of Boscombe Traders Association, said the people of Boscombe wanted to see a community centre in the former BCCA building.

He added: “Twelve months ago this council wanted to knock the whole place down. When somebody wants to turn it into something good for the community all they want to do is turn it into another place for people with problems of alcohol and drugs.”

Cllrs Phil Stanley-Watts and Linda Bailey both said they believed Boscombe needed a community centre.

And this surprises people? By now I would have thought you'd have caught on to the fact as far as the Council is concerned, Boscombe is the dustbin of Bournemouth. They won't listen, they will just keep dumping the human c**p into that area. Then they say they are amazed that there are so many drug related problems in Boscombe, thats if they admit it at all. I really do wonder how long it will be before the people of Boscombe decide enough is enough, and start taking the law into their own hands. Whats the point in complaining to the police and Council? Neither listen.

Given the comments on the 'Reef' project and the amount of money being thrown at it in an attempt to bring 'affluent' visitors to Boscombe I am outraged that the council are turning a blind eye to the needs of the community at large. What the hell are they thinking...oh yes money of course.

funnily enough I could post this comment to most stories and it would be pertinant. It's the council, they don't care about residents and it will stay that way until we have them removed or arrested. I just hope that by the next elections we, the people of Bournemouth know what we have to do. Remove Bournemouth worst ever council and asign them to history

another council joke, previously the council were going to sell this land off as local housing. A few locals thought better and formed group with a viable business plan at no cost to the council to reopen it as community arts facility by getting the building list a numerous groups interested in being involve which up set the council no revenue to pay the selves more expenses. Now they want to open up a family centre big joke the under the banner of family support the people who will to go their will have drug alcohol problems and people on probation wow nice one council their line is to make Boscombe better yes so you and your cronies can have beach parties while local residents suffer just up the road. We have seen how you refurbished (ie OVERSTRAND) old building cost twice as much as they are worth. would it not be better to build a purpose built complex modern well equipped it next to the social services building in Bournemouth on the car park next door(oh dear in senior councillors wards) you are trying to sell but can the building would be modern fit for purpose and have social services outreach personnel police, probation and courts on the doorstep to ensure that a correct support system would be in place and all in walking distance and direct public transport facilities. NO MORE OF THIS TYPE OF FACILITY IN BOSCOMBE WE HAVE ENOUGH I ALSO SEE CERTAIN COUNCILLORS HAVE VERBALLY BACKED THIS SUPPORTING THEIR LEADERS OF THE COUNCIL NOT THE RESIDENTS THEY WERE ELECTED TO REPRESENTS

Doesnt it say a centre for children and for families. Since when did that mean drugs hostels? More like boscombe traders making it up so they can blame the council as usual because their shops are rubbish.

wonder how much of that 2.3million will actually get used for the project? thank goodness for the freedom of information act, at least people can see how much is really spent on this and not other plans. All this would seem to be about the council getting its hands on money. Do they care about the local people? they just seem to use us all as a big cash cow, while grabbing any funding they can no matter the fallout.

Since when has council officers listened to residents.Never!.Dur
ing the early debates of the regeneration of Shelley Manor the emphasis was on a Community Centre there and the BCCA,never came into the equation.Boscombe,do
es have its fair share of halls.Selwyn Hall,Temperance Hall and others and this has made the BCCA,vulnerable.I know things have changed with the RDA,regarding Shelley but is it enough to save the BCCA?.whatever, when i went there it had not changed since i went to school there in the 1960's,even the old water tap was there and only reception had been modified. The worrying thing is Cllr Beesley declined to comment on whether Drug rehabilitation or offenders would attend the centre as the Deputy Leader Of the Council he must have an insight to its future developement. As for the Boscombe Traders they are a fledging group who represent a tiny minority in Boscombe but seem to uphold its everybodies view.

Another thing that Bournemouth Borough Council are in danger of messing up. This follows the financial mess that Steve Macloughlin, & Judith Martin have created.

Live and let live, the problem is the people who won't allow others to do so.
