"Two sides to Boscombe story", say readers

A FIERCE debate has been sparked on the Daily Echo website following our story about the two sides of Boscombe.

We reported yesterday how millions of pounds was being poured into the surf reef and Overstrand development while, just streets away, a man was left fighting for his life after a vicious attack in an alleyway.

Readers at bournemouthecho. co.uk appear divided about whether the regeneration project will really benefit Boscombe.

Ferret38, from Bournemouth said: “Boscombe seafront and garden project has really come up trumps. The only problem with Boscombe centre is that there are too many drug treatment projects going on. This, in turn, brings all the dolelites, junkies, and beggars drunks and thieves to the area.”

Mediclogan5, from Bournemouth, said: “Some years ago Britain boasted itself a classless society, so throwing vast amount of cash into Boscombe to attract a more ‘affluent’ community and spend lavish amounts of capital into a sport complex for the minority.”

Cooperman, from Bournemouth, said: “You can’t just improve parts of the area and think the rest will follow when the place is riddled with rehab hostels, low standard accommodation and is a magnet for 'those in the know' looking for whatever their 'fix' might be.

“To find someone has been stabbed or near-on kicked to death is no big surprise to those who know what this area is really like.”

Nigel24, from Bournemouth, said: “I was a Boscombe resident board member of the Neighbourhood Management Board. Boscombe has a great divide, south of Christchurch Road which is enjoying prosperity and the north of Christchurch Road, which is being left to deteriorate.

“Has it got worse, yes I think so. Has Boscombe a future, yes it has, but only when councillors take a hard look and start engaging with those who endure the problems 24/7 like I did in Palmerston Road.”

Some residents were more sympathetic to the problems.

Cantique, from Bournemouth, said: “Boscombe may be a magnet for drunks and druggies, but do you really think that they want to be like that?

“Their way of life is all they now know, and there is no real hope or help available for them to improve themselves.”

Aviewoneverything, from Bournemouth, said: “Bournemouth, and Boscombe in particular, has a huge number of drug/alcohol rehab centres which draws people suffering with these addictions from all over the country.

“After all, who wouldn’t want to spend their rehab in a seaside resort rather than, say, Liverpool. The problem is that when these people fall off the wagon, and many of them do, they stay here. They do not go back to where they came from.

“As such, this town is simply a breeding ground for this type of problem. The best way to improve the area would be to move the rehab centres away. The dealers would follow their clients, leaving Boscombe to once again become the lovely place it once was.” Others were more positive about the regeneration project.

Peggy Babcock, from Poole, said: “The bottom line is the re-development is a step in the right direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so give it time.”

BourneRed, from Bournemouth, said: “Boscombe has improved, the redevelopments with new property, etc, has just moved the low-lives, as people call them.”

Magicmonkey, from Bournemouth, said: “Have lived in Boscombe for eight years (Chessel Avenue) through choice – clifftop and gardens at one end of the road, high street the other. Park and tennis courts opposite.

“Quiet, leafy avenue, no noise, no trouble, never been threatened and I am very happy there – wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in Bournemouth.”

From reading the stories, it appears the general consensus is that Boscombe needs attention else where before anything such as Boscombe Spa or Surf Reef is put to any good use.

How can anyone say Boscombe is better when the first story is about a stabbing of a BT man.

I have lived in Boscombe for the last 7 weeks having just moved to Bournemouth and did not know anything about the area before I got here.

It didn’t take me long to realize I was living in the 'colourful' area of Bournemouth and why the rent on my big, bright, airy, clean room with a view was so cheap. I was surprised by the amount of street drinkers about in such a small area and how they were just been left alone by the authorities. But saying that I don't feel scared walking around and don't get a sense of trouble in the air during the days or weeknights. Im also beginning to recognize the faces so I don’t think there is actually that much problematic people about. I have lived in parts of Manchester and London that were quiet rough but Boscombe seems quiet tame in comparison.

Weekends are a different story with the Opera House and what’s on tough.

I have always wondered why certain areas get run day and others don't, but having read the comments here it’s clear that the fact that Boscombe has a lot of rehab centres is the cause. These centres are nessacary as people need help, but they should have been spread out.
It also explains to my why there's a lot of different accents about. But not why a lot of them are from the North of the country?

On the positive I do get a sense that Boscombe is going through a lot of changes and that I have moved here at the right time. If I owned some property here I would be quietly confident that the prices here will be more that other parts of Bournemouth in 5 years. The beachfront here is as good as I’ve seen with its facilities and quality, and I’ve been to lots around the world as im a water sport enthusiast. It’s also worth pointing out that rough areas have historically attracted liberal arty crowds who make nothing but a positive contribution to the areas where they live in. Boscombe Underground is a start and a good example.

To sum up my viewpoint I think a lot of past decisions’ have been made with the governing of Boscombe but a lot of very good ones have been made in recent years and that the future looks bright.

A telesales agent gets stabbed and his boss tries to use the publicity as an advert for his business.

i totally agree with cooperman when he said it comes as no big surprise to find out that someone has been stabbed. i think that the councillors and whoever it is that the make the decision on investment are completely looking in the wrong direction. thier avoiding dealing the core problems directly, having a few sandbags on the bottom of the seabed down the beach and opening a few snobby bars and restaurants isnt helping all the underpriveleged kids round the area and isnt helping the people with real problems.the three million pound that they`ve spent on facilities for surfers would have gone a ehole lot further five minutes up the road for the real people of boscombe who have an every day struggle just getting on, so if you ask me get the place clean yes, but dont try and turn it into something its not and will probably never ever be.

Having read the comments here I hope the councilors read them as well, you cannot make the problem go away or get better by throwing large amounts of money at it and pray that a more affluent community will alter the very fabric of Boscombe. Measures need to be taken as well as to look at the root causes...cheap drinks being one of them. And to add a footnote the plight of Boscombe has been going on for decades its not new, just the fact that millions is being spent for those that have and not for those that dont.

basically they all need to look at helping the local community and the problems here at home before they start throwing money away in these really irrelevant things. ask people on the street that live around the parmy road and walpole park area what they would rather, a surf reef , or other facilities like youth clubs and other projects to help keep there children busy and not on the route to being like the people on the high street drinking and using drugs.

I've lived here for 18 years and Boscombe has always been a very volatile place,I've witnessed a stabbing, had my bank card stolen by a young man who bumped into me then sent his girlfriend to Argos to spend my hard earnt money, I have been threatened by a drunk for watering plants and a couple of weeks ago I stopped my car to let a man cross the zebra crossing outside Sainsburys only to be met with a menacing glare and swearing at me, obviously a nutter but I was not willing to challenge him. I certainly would not walk anywhere in Boscombe at night on my own, bad enough in the day.
