MORE than 100 people queued outside Bournemouth's newest supermarket ahead of its official opening.

Olympian Nick Dempsey, Britain's first-ever windsurfing medallist, visited the Mallard Road Retail Park's branch of Aldi on Thursday for the launch.

One lucky customer was also offered the chance to win their Christmas dinner courtesy of Aldi, with the first 100 visitors queueing outside the store offered crackers by Nick.

One of the Christmas crackers handed out contained the winning ticket.

Nick then cut the ribbon, declaring the store officially open.

The sportsman was joined by volunteers from the Bournemouth Foodbank, who received donations from Aldi staff.

Store manager Paul Clarke said: “There was a real buzz around the opening, with people pulling their crackers, the DJ counting down to the ribbon cutting and the anticipation to see inside the new Bournemouth store.

"We’re so glad we can help make one lucky shopper's Christmas with our cracker competition.”

Nick said: “I’ve had so much fun - it’s really got me in the mood for Christmas.

"The people of Bournemouth have been so welcoming.

"I’m delighted to be part of the opening ceremony.

"Aldi has been so supportive throughout my career so it’s nice to give something back."

The store has 500 shared car parking bays and 1,114 square metres of retail space.

Shoppers can expect to find a range of food, a specially-selected Christmas range, gifts and the Super6 fruit and vegetables.

There will also be twice-weekly 'specialbuy' promotions on Thursdays and Sundays.

The opening of the store has created 30 new jobs. Applicants are still being recruited.

The branch will be open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
