EXAM season is in full swing and with it comes a high workload and stress for thousands of young people.

Childline has reported an increase in the number of youngsters seeking counselling over exams.

And advice is now on offer to help parents get through the maze of revision and pressure.

New figures reveal an 11 per cent rise in the number of children seeking counselling.

Calls to Childline from 16-18-year-olds went up 21 per cent but it’s not just those taking external exams that are affected.

Most calls came from 12-15-year-olds sitting internal exams at their schools.

One teenage boy who contacted Childline said: “I’m really feeling the pressure of A-levels. I’ve been having panic attacks and difficulty breathing. I’m so afraid of not getting the right grades and I’m stressed about the future.”

Another said: “I am about to take my GCSEs and I am under so much pressure as my parents are expecting me to do really well. My parents don’t allow me to do anything else apart from revision and if I try and talk to them it always ends up in an argument.”

Alistair Brien, head of Bournemouth School for Girls, has offered advice.

He said: “As exams approach be sure to have a clear and realistic revision timetable. Take regular breaks and ensure you are eating properly and getting enough sleep.

“On the day, avoid any last minute panics by leaving in plenty of time to get to school and ensuring you have the right equipment.

“In the exam room, read the questions carefully and use the full amount of time available to you. If you are struggling with a particular question, move on and come back to it at the end. At the end of the day, all you can do is your best, because your best is good enough.”

Mark Avoth, Principal of the Bourne Academy, added: “This time of year is always pressured. However, we are confident that our students have been well prepared for their GCSEs and A levels. Many have accessed additional revision classes after school and at weekends.

“A free breakfast for all of our students ensures that each day gets off to the best possible start. Exam meditation sessions are available.”
