POLICE are hunting a hit and run driver who left a man in need of hospital treatment.

They have appealed for witnesses after a pedestrian suffered an ankle injury in a collision with a black BMW in West Cliff Road, Bournemouth.

Officers hope a member of the public will be able to identify the driver of the car, which had a Boxer-type dog in the boot.

The incident, in which a 25-year-old man from Weymouth was hurt, took place at 9pm yesterday.

PC Mike Henstridge, of the Dorset Police traffic unit, said: "The BMW car involved in this collision failed to stop at the scene and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw the manner of driving of the BMW immediately before or after the incident, to please contact Dorset Police.

"I would also like to hear from anyone who may have information about the identity of the driver."
