IT wouldn’t really be a proper Christmas without a trip to a good old family panto, now would it?

And every family really should go and see Cinderella at Bournemouth’s Pavilion – it is everything a pantomime should be.

Not having seen a Pavilion panto before, I was expecting lots of cheesy singing and dancing, some audience participation and a few corny gags, with the obligatory happy ending.

Instead, I was blown away by this fantastic, professional performance.

With the exception of a couple of unfamiliar numbers, the show was packed with the year’s biggest hits, as well as a few retro tunes for good measure – including a brilliantly clever Queen cover.

Former Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer was perfect in the role of the likeable heroine, while X-Factor’s Rhydian was suitably regal as Prince Charming.

Melanie Walters, better known as the mum from Gavin and Stacey, was a great Fairy Godmother, and Noel Brodie had the audience – young and old alike – in the palm of his hand with his quick-witted comedy as Buttons.

And of course, Cinderella would not be complete without the Ugly Sisters – David Ball and Michael Chance were undoubtedly the most outrageous siblings in panto and a credit must also go to the wardrobe team here for the fabulous, over-the-top creations.

Even the youngest dancers were full of confidence with their beaming smiles and pretty costumes.

The night went – almost – without a hitch, but pantomime is probably the only show on earth where it only adds to the fun when things go a little awry.

The audience was ready and willing to join in when required and, reserved as you may be, it’s impossible not to shout out when the Ugly Sisters are mean to Cinderella, or the ghost is ‘behind you’!

Fantastic fun from start to finish, the best family night out in town!
