THE streets of Wareham were lined with hundreds of revellers for the town's annual carnival procession.

Hundreds of visitors, who were urged to don bright or silly outfits, packed the route on Sunday lunchtime.

The procession, which snaked its way along North Street and West Street on its way to the Wareham Recreation Ground, Worgret Road, started at 1pm.

Carnival Queen Georgia Candy and her two princesses, Katie Lake and Phoebe Allen, took pride of place in the parade.

Other participants included Wareham Rugby Club, majorettes, a brass band, a town crier, and the Poole Field Gun display.

Father-of-three William Bennett, who attended with his young family, said: "It is the first time my youngest has ever seen a carnival procession and she's been so excited about seeing the carnival princess.

"I think it has been a really nice procession, it is good to see everyone having a good time."

Hundreds of people packed Wareham Recreation Ground after the procession ended.

Family fun on the Rec included a falconry display in the main arena and a display by the field gun team. The British Legion also set up a poppy picnic.

A carnival spokesman explained: "There was a succession of displays by local groups and organisations as well as great games for kids and adults to join in.

"As we had plenty of space this year we arranged for kids' games and a pets' corner."

Particular favourites with the crowd included the giant sausage roll - roll, and the tug of war.

There were plenty of different stalls to visit and browse, and a marquee and bar. Live music in the marquee took place into the early evening.

Purbeck resident Mark Jacobsen said: "I love the Wareham Carnival, it always makes me happy. Long may it continue."
