WHETHER you are a Valkyrie or a Dancing Queen there is something for everyone at this year's Proms in the Park event.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's three day musical spectacular is returning to Meyrick Park in August for the first time since the Russian Extravaganza of 2011.

The event begins on Friday, August 5, with a feast of popular classics, including Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkyries', Ponchielli's 'Dance of the Hours', Rossini's Barber of Seville overture and Bizet's Carmen suite, as well as themes from Star Wars and Jurassic Park.

Thousands of music-lovers are expected to flock to the event over the course of the weekend, and those attendees keen to play a more active role in the festivities are being invited to don flares and put on their dancing shoes during the ABBA greatest hits concert on the Saturday.

The ABBA Symphonic Spectacular will see the BSO perform classic songs Super Trouper, The Winner Takes It All, Waterloo, Dancing Queen and Money, Money, Money among others.

Sunday will be a full family fun day, kicking off at 12.30pm, with a son et lumiere finale including lights, lasers and fireworks.

There will be performances by the Kinson Family Orchestra and CODA Ukulele Orchestra and Big Band as well as the SoundStorm Quintet, a samba group and the BSO Big Sing.

In a spectacular finale the BSO will team up with Inspiration Choir Southampton to perform music from films including The Last Samurai, Adiemus and Moulin Rouge, as well as pieces by Enya, Pink Floyd and Two Steps from Hell.

For the Friday and Saturday concerts, admission to the arena is from 6pm for picnics, with access via Meyrick Park Crescent and Braidley Road.

The concerts start at 8pm and are expected to finish around 10.20pm with firework displays.

Tickets are already on sale and going fast. This year the Daily Echo has teamed up with the BSO as media partner for the Proms and will be giving away 20 pairs of tickets for each day of the event.

Details of the give-away will be released nearer the time.
