A 62-year-old was 'punched in the face a number of times' by a cyclist after a near miss at a pedestrian crossing, police say.

The victim was travelling on his moped along Southbourne Grove at 1.10pm last Monday, when a man cycled across his path at a pedestrian crossing while the light was on green for motorists.

There was no contact between the moped and bicycle, but as the moped turned into Grand Avenue to find a place to park he noticed the cyclist coming towards him.

A police spokesman said: “The cyclist punched the victim in the face a number of times, which caused him to fall over. The cyclist then got on top of the victim and attempted to punch him again before cycling off.”

The 62-year-old was left with a bloody nose, cuts and bruises, but didn’t require hospital treatment.

Police Constable Lee Mather, of Bournemouth police, said: "I am releasing a CCTV image of the suspect in the hope that someone can identify him.

"If you know who this person is please contact police, or Crimestoppers anonymously."
