A BOURNEMOUTH beach hut called "Serenity-on-Sea" has reached the final of a national competition to find the Beach Hut of the Year.

This colourful wooden cabin at Durley Chine might only be a few feet across but it has been a sanctuary and a source of joy for the couple who call it their second home.

Liz and Martin Baum from Verwood use the space to write, meditate, relax and socialise, and are there daily when the weather is good. But they visit rain or shine, at least once or twice a week throughout the rest of the year - even at Christmas.

Martin, 56, has multiple sclerosis, and wife Liz, 64, has been caring for him for almost two decades. The hut has been vital in helping them cope with Martin’s illness, and plays a pivotal role in his rehabilitation during frequent relapses.

Their love affair with beach huts began after they moved to Verwood from London with their son Josh 18 years ago, after Martin's health took a turn for the worse and Liz gave up work to care for him.

Satirist Martin's creativity was revived, and he penned the best-selling 'yoof-speak' guide to Shakespeare, 'To Be Or Not To Be, Innit' from a beach hut.

After an eight year wait they finally took on the Durley Chine plot four years ago - and have never looked back.

Added Liz: "We didn't know how much we needed a beach hut until we got it - it's made a massive difference to our lives."

They have created a relaxing space with custom build fold out perspex doors so they can be cosy inside in all weathers, cushions, throws, solar lights, and a little two ring cooker and grill.

"It's just a wonderful place to go - a little sanctuary, a bit of peace. It's like a little holiday for us - we love it."

And now the couple, who celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this year, could claim top prize in the Towergate Insurance Beach Hut of the Year competition.

Liz said: "We'd love to win - it would be such a nice gift. We'll have a beach party if we win - Martin has been calling it Baumstock!"

The Baums' Durley Chine hut is among ten finalists in the competition. You can vote at www.towergateinsurance.co.uk/bhoty until July 12.

Winners will be announced on August 19 and the top prize includes £1,000, £500 for the local beach hut association, a winner's blue plaque, and a visit from TV property expert Phil Spencer, one of the competition judges.
