BOURNEMOUTH council has given notice of road closures on the East Cliff for a month after the Wheels Festival takes place.

But the council says the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order has only been published in case engineers need to return to the site of last month's land slip to establish if any long-term action is needed.

A public notice states that parts of East Overcliff Drive and Meyrick Road will be closed to all motor vehicles for cliff top remedial works by Bournemouth council between June 7 and July 8.

It says full emergency services access will be maintained, access to properties will remain, depending on site safety, and a diversion route will be in operation.

Gary Powell, Head of Traffic, Engineering and Major Projects, said: "A major operation to clean up the site of the East Cliff land slip is on schedule and it is our intention to have the site cleared within the next couple of days ahead of the Wheels Festival.

"A close and detailed inspection of the area of cliff from both the top and bottom has shown that no further movement has occurred, and works are underway to clear the site as well as prepare for longer term actions.

"Once we have undertaken the clean-up operation we will establish any longer term actions that may be required. As part of this there may be a requirement to re-visit the site from the top of the cliff and we have planned for this by making the necessary Traffic Order arrangements.

"Due to the restrictions around the process for making traffic orders, we are legally required to advertise this in the local paper at set times based on the start date of the order."

The Wheels Festival takes place this year from June 3-5 with much of the entertainment taking place on the East Cliff.
