IT’S more than 60 years since Guys and Dolls became the smash hit Broadway musical of the 1950s.

But the latest invention of the popular, old-school musical is still drawing the crowds and has a new twist which pulls it firmly into the 21st century.

The gangsters, gamblers and nightclub dancers of downtown New York are still there, still sassy.

But their dance skills have moved with the times thanks to the stunning choreography of Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta and Andrew Wright.

The strong ensemble are the backbone of the show and it’s difficult to take your eyes off them as they pull off some stunning moves in front of a traditional yet dazzling and brightly-lit set.

But take your eyes off them you must for some pretty impressive performances from the main cast.

Richard Fleeshman as Sky Masterson and Maxwell Caulfield as Nathan Detroit are a treat to watch.

And polished performances from Lucy Jane Adcock (Miss Adelaide) and Anna O’Byrne (Sarah Brown)give this production just the right amount of comedy as well as chemistry.

This show is from a golden age and includes some of the best Musical Theatre songs of all time. Luck be a Lady and My Time of Day were well-received but Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat was simply stunning and really grabbed the attention of the audience.

It’s easy to see why this show was nominated for six Olivier awards and attracted many thousands of people during its stint in the West End.

The tour is proving equally popular and is spending this week at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.
