FORTY monitoring points have been installed across a 250m stretch of Bournemouth’s East Cliff following Sunday’s 100ft landslip.

East Overcliff Drive is set to remain closed until next week while council engineers continue to assess the site.

The impacted area has been surrounded by safety barriers since a toilet block on the promenade was flattened and the cliff’s distinctive Edwardian funicular railway lift was left submerged in debris during the early-morning incident.

Seafront manager Chris Saunders said: “Engineers are installing up to 40 monitoring points along an area of East Overcliff Drive 120m either side of Sunday’s landslip.

“These monitoring points will take detailed measurements over a number of days, which should indicate the likelihood of further movement.”

Mr Saunders added that pedestrian access to the footway is being restricted in order to “maintain the sterility of the monitoring points and minimise the risk of disturbance”.

“Signage on site has been erected to keep the public informed,” he said.

Up-to-date data about the topography of the cliffs is also being studied and additional visual inspections are taking place as part of this assessment.

The traffic diversion along East Overcliff Drive will remain in place throughout the inspection.
