A RETIRED man from Creekmoor has walked over 1.5million steps across the UK to raise money for two charities.

Roger Bromby, 76, travelled along the coastal path from Minehead back to Poole for a total of 674 miles over the space of two months, finishing the challenge on Friday, November 6.

His aim was to raise as much money as possible for the children's unit at Poole Hospital in memory of his daughter, Adele, who died aged 12 following a short illness in 1974. Funds will also go The Shane Alderman Charitable Trust, founded in the name of Peter's grandson, to support young wheelchair athletes and those with disabilities to train and compete in events.

He was supported along the way by his friend, Peter Mortlock, who said: "There were some very trying sessions which were made harder by the rain, so we had to pull off the coastal path a couple of times and walk on the roads because it was too dangerous.

"Roger battled through the last 106.5-miles to the end in the pouring rain. It was great that a few people came to meet him."

This included, Peter said, Roger's daughter, Cheryl Goldsmith, and his grandchildren, who walked with him for a day and 'made his week'.

Roger worked in the dairy business for his entire life until he retired, including founding and running S&R Dairies, where he delivered to 5,000 customers from 1968 to 1999.

Peter said that in total for the challenge, entitled the Walk of Memories, Roger had taken 1,595,139 steps over a combined walking time of 259 hours and 59 minutes. During his walk, he averaged 2.94mph and he had burnt 168,033 calories in total, which culminated in a loss of two stone in weight.

Funds are still being counted and collected for the walk. For more information, go to Justgiving.com/Peter-Mortlock
