HUNDREDS of twinkling lights have been switched on to start the festive season in Southbourne.

Around 200 people braved the chilly weather to see Bournemouth’s Mayor perform the switch on ceremony at Southbourne Green.

Southbourne Community Choir provided musical entertainment and mulled wine was served.

The lights, courtesy of the Southourne on Sea Business Association and the Coastal BID, will remain on until the New Year and will provide the backdrop for a special visit from Santa next month.

The man himself will be in his grotto on the green for one day only on Saturday December 12.

Southbourne councillor and deputy mayor Chris Mayne said: “It was nice to see so many people there – events like this are good for the community.

“We hope lots of people will come to see Santa. There will be donkeys there as well.”
