A HAVE-a-go hero kicked through the windscreen of a car to rescue the driver after it overturned in East Howe this morning.

Several calls were made to the emergency services at 11.37am leading to police, firefighters and ambulance crews heading to Kinson Road after the car was reported to have rolled several times.

Steven Weeks, a delivery driver for Hendy Parts, said that he helped to get the woman out of the black VW Polo after establishing that she was not in serious pain.

He said: "I was driving down Kinson Road when it had just happened. I jumped up onto the side of the car and the woman got up in the car. I didn't know if it was going to catch fire so I wanted to get her out.

"I kicked the windscreen through. I've got pretty big boots on, but it wasn't easy as it is all glued in. I think that the adrenaline kicks it and you just take over.

"I wouldn't have moved her if she had said she was in pain but she seemed to answer all of my questions okay about where she was going and whether she was hurt."

Steven said that once they both made it safely out of the car, a resident who was watching the drama unfold went inside to get the woman a chair to sit on until the emergency services arrived.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service confirmed that they took a 60-year-old woman to Royal Bournemouth Hospital to receive treatment for cuts to her hand.

Police cordoned off the road between Co-Op on the corner of East Howe Road and Hadow Road while the car, registered to a woman from Ferndown, was blocking the road in both directions.

A silver Ford Fiesta, registered to a man from Bournemouth, was also struck by VW Polo during the incident. Both cars were taken away by a recovery vehicle.

The local authorities also attended to clear some broken glass from the road before it was fully re-opened by 12.30pm.
