A PARALYMPIC goalball team are recruiting new players to help them compete against other teams across the UK.

The Dorset Demons is made up primarily of visually-impaired players but is holding trials for sighted players on Saturday, May 23. The sport was introduced to the paralympic world in the early 1970s and has produced teams from all over the world.

Goalball involves players wearing blackout visors firing a ball, which has bells in it, at the opposition goal. However, all three defending players must be lying down.

The Dorset Demons is the county’s first paralympic goalball team and the Dorset Blind Association encourages visually-impaired people to play the sport, both for fitness and social reasons.

The team’s coach, Lukasz Stawarz, said: “We’ve come this far and now we want to continue taking our team to compete against others around the UK.

“Our team embodies the message that losing your sight doesn’t have to mean missing out.”

He added people of all fitness levels and abilities are welcome to come along to a training session and have a go. They take place on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 2-4pm at the Victoria School sports hall in Poole.
