THE Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will entertain an audience of millions at the 120th edition of The Proms this summer.

Featuring alongside some of the world’s greatest classical musicians, the BSO has announced the programme of performances it hopes will dazzle crowds at the Royal Albert Hall and those listening at home during the BBC extravaganza.

Led by principal conductor Kirill Karabits, the BSO’s programme will present a musical snapshot of 1945, with organisers saying they want to capture the atmosphere of ‘a world emerging from the haze of war in the neon glow of Hollywood and new-found hope’.

This will encompass three contrasting works to sum up the spirit of the year: Britten’s Peter Grimes, reinventing English opera; Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, striving after the ‘grandeur of the human spirit’; and Korngold’s Violin Concerto.

Acclaimed violinist Nicola Benedetti is the soloist in Korngold’s Violin Concerto, a piece that formed the heart of best-selling classical album The Silver Violin in 2012.

And Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony is being recorded for broadcast on BBC Four on August 30 as part of Mark Elder’s exploration of different symphonies performed during the season.

Britten’s Peter Grimes will see the Four Sea Interludes performed and the first half of the concert will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Four on August 13 August as part of the BBC’s Concerto series, presented by Tom Service.

The entire BBC Prom 34 performed by the BSO at the Royal Albert Hall will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer from Thursday, August 13.
