A hidden basement beneath Bournemouth’s former Imax site is set to be developed into a high-profile art gallery.

The underground room could be transformed into a spacious art gallery that will eventually include 20 to 30 affordable community studio spaces.

Art Aspirations Ltd wants to use the gallery to showcase graduate work from Bournemouth University and the Arts University Bournemouth, as well as pieces from local, national and international artists.

The company also want to establish a charitable trust that will offer courses and training to local socially disadvantaged young people.

Art director for the company Richard Barnbrook said he had high hopes for the proposed scheme. “The project will be a pop up for two or three years but we have been told that if we break even or make a profit there is the possibility to expand to a purpose built site.”

The main draw of the premises is the open space of the exhibition room; Mr Barnbrook envisions a changeable environment that allows artists to adapt the underground surrounding by building walls and areas in the larger space.

“Bournemouth desperately needs a high status gallery in order to enhance its cultural identity,” said director Janine Purser.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Bournemouth firmly on the map as an important artistic centre. We hope the local people will back this important project by voicing their support.”

“Plans developed so far have been privately funded and the intention is that the profits from the gallery, once up and running, would contribute towards the affordable studios and the educational projects with only limited call on the public purse.”

The company is looking for assistance from local investors to help raise the funds needed to secure the seafront premises and bring the art gallery to life. For more information email artaspirations.ltd@gmail.com.
