A WOMAN was tied up and threatened with a blade by masked raiders in a 'terrifying' burglary at her home.

The victim's ordeal took place at a property on Christchurch Road, near to Parley Cross traffic lights last Wednesday.

Detectives are now urging anyone with information to come forward.

Demanding money, the two offenders threatened the woman, who was alone in the house, with a 'bladed weapon', while she was downstairs. The woman, thought to be in her 60s, was then ordered upstairs and tied up by the wrists and ankles.

The 'bladed weapon' was confirmed by police to be a letter opener with a long silver blade.

The pair stole an unknown quantity of cash and two dark coloured briefcases containing sentimental items.

One of the briefcases is described as an old fashioned-type with opening clips. The second case has silver markings at the top, rounded corners and a code dial to unlock.

Jewellery was also taken, including a distinctive 'jacket' ring, which is wishbone-shaped with diamonds on each wishbone and a diamond ring set inside.

Both men wore masks and are described as being between five feet four inches and six feet tall and of medium build.

The first man wore all dark clothing and a hood over his head and face.

The second wore blue tracksuit trousers with a white stripe down the side and a dark coloured hooded top with the hood up.

Detective Constable Jo Shewbridge, of Bournemouth CID, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim who was home alone at the time. Thankfully she was uninjured.

“I would like to reassure members of public that crimes such as this are rare in Dorset.

“I am appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of this incident and noticed anyone acting suspiciously or saw anything out of the ordinary to come forward.

“If you have been offered for sale any of the unusual items described, I urge you to call Dorset Police on 101.”

Shock after 'terrifying' raid

Members of West Parley's community say they are shocked and saddened by what happened last week.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, traders and residents said they were surprised to hear such a terrible burglary had taken place along from a bustling parade of shops.

Pippa Owen, 42, who works at Parley Barbers said: “I just can't imagine that happening round here at all.

“It's just terrible; so shocking. I hope the lady recovers from it okay.”

Janet Banyard, 52, said: “I used to live here and it's a lovely area, very quiet.

“It's very frightening. Something like this is your worst nightmare.”

Dorset county councillor and East Dorset ward councillor, John Wilson said: “East Dorset, under normal circumstances, has a very, very low crime rate.

“I am sure that Chief Constable Debbie Simpson and Martyn Underhill will both be shocked about this and will be moving heaven and earth to bring the perpetrators to very swift justice.”

He reminded residents to ensure they followed regular security advice for their homes this Christmas.
