A BOURNEMOUTH convenience store accused of failing to prevent crime and disorder has been allowed to stay open, providing it complies with new tougher conditions.

The Best-One store and off licence in Windham Road, Springbourne was the subject of a behind closed doors licensing meeting on Tuesday, after Dorset Police asked for its licence to be reviewed. Dorset Police said it “did not consider the premises to be promoting the licensing objectives of the prevention of crime and disorder and public safety.”

After Tuesday’s meeting, Bournemouth council confirmed the licence was not revoked but was amended following mediation between Dorset Police and the licence holder. A condition requiring the owner to improve the shop’s CCTV system and make it available whenever required was added to the licence, along with a condition requiring the owner’s sons to undertake conflict management training.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, chair of the licensing board, said: “The meeting was held in private because there could be criminal charges in the future and the information provided at the meeting could have potentially undermined the judicial process.

“But I can confirm a series of new conditions were added to ensure that their CCTV is always available when required. The manager’s sons have also been asked to go on some conflict management training.”

This decision is subject to appeal by both Dorset Police and the holder of the premises licence and the decision will not take effect until after the appeal period of 21 days has passed.
