A TATTOO artist from Poole has received an award for her striking work depicting battle scenes from the Second World War.

Mim Hennessy-Mann, who works at Just Add Ink in Hamworthy, received the award for the best large black and grey tattoo at the third Jurassic Coast Tattoo Convention held in Bournemouth at the weekend.

Her award-winning tattoo was inked across the back of WW2 enthusiast Jason Roff over a staggering 42 hours.

“It was his first ever tattoo. There was a huge amount of trust on his part and the back is the biggest canvas he could give me.

I felt very honoured he came to me,” said the mother of two.

The pair spent hours designing the tattoo, which is based on pictures from the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Villers-Bocage.

It includes the faces of RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader, RAF Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding, German Waffen-SS tank commander Michael Wittmann and German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and was completed during three-hour sessions over six months.

The 29-year-old said: “They are all based on photographs of the battle scenes and the people.

“I do a lot of realism and portraiture work. I love doing portraits and this is why I got into tattooing.”

During the convention, Mim also received the award for the best small black and grey tattoo for a tattoo she designed freehand of the mythological creature Medusa.

She said: “I was massively surprised. I was not expecting to win anything.

“As a tattoo artist you are constantly trying to better yourself and you never feel like you’re perfect. It was quite a strange feeling to know that someone else had appreciated your work.”

And Jason was so happy with the tattoo, he’s already booked in to have more WW2 scenes tattooed on his arms and chest.

Mim said: “We have started the design process and we’ll be getting started on it in the New Year.”
