TOWN centre visitors are being warned to expect ongoing disruption during five months of roadworks at Bournemouth’s Richmond Hill.

Work to alter the layout of Richmond Hill and give the area a more “vibrant and fresh” feel is now well under way.

The work will go on until March 2015, with a break over Christmas.

Bournemouth council said it would make every effort to minimise disruption and that the result would be a safer and more efficient road layout.

The scheme, part of the Government-funded Three Towns Travel project, includes new segregated cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossing facilities, new trees and seating areas, new cycle stands, the introduction of a 20mph zone, a new loading bay in St Stephen’s Road and a new loading bay outside Richmond House.

Richmond Hill will remain open and access to residential properties and businesses will be maintained. Yelverton Road, which is normally a one-way street, is currently closed at the junction with Richmond Hill.

Cllr Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport, said: “We are delighted that through additional government funding we are able to make further improvements to another town centre site. The scheme at Richmond Hill will create a safer and more welcoming environment for the many visitors, commuters and shoppers who use this part of town.

“Keeping our town moving is a key priority and we are committed to reducing congestion. By making these improvements we are providing people with more options for how they travel whilst supporting the local economy.”

And Mike Holmes, service director for planning and transport, said: “Inevitably there will be some disruption during construction, however we have planned these works to make sure this is kept to a minimum for local residents, businesses and the travelling public.”
