FIRE crews were called to a block of flats in Winton last night.
Initially, it was thought that people were still inside when firefighters from Redhill, Westbourne and Springbourne were sent to the scene in Portland Road at around 10.10pm.
On arrival, they found that a top floor flat was alight, but everyone had been accounted for.
The fire was brought under control within half an hour by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
The volunteer-run Red Cross vehicle also attended to provide support for the residents.
A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said that the cause of the blaze was thought to be accidental, started by tealights.
There was fire and severe smoke damage to the room where the flames started and smoke damage to the rest of the flat.
The spokesman added: “This incident highlights the dangers of using candles within your home, if you do use candles ensure they are placed in a suitable holder and are not near any combustible materials. Never leave candles unattended and always extinguish them before you go to bed.”
