A DEVELOPER seeking to build flats and restaurants in “the ultimate location” opposite the BIC has submitted a new set of plans.

The Oram Moss development company already has permission to demolish some of the Punshon Church in Exeter Road and build 45 one-bedroom flats and 45 holiday lets on the site.

But the plans were put on hold during the recession and now developer Philip Oram has altered the scheme to knock down all of the empty church and build 109 flats in its place.

The scheme would also include 6,200 square feet of commercial floor space and Mr Oram said a “blue chip tenant” was ready to sign a lease for a restaurant there.

“The scheme is very similar, it’s just making better use of the approved scheme by demolishing the tower and getting another floor in the current approved structure,” he said.

“It’s the ultimate location in Bournemouth, a one-off opportunity to be opposite the entrance to the BIC, within walking distance of the beach.

“Flats and restaurants, I would think, would trade very well there. I put everything on hold during the recession but now that’s lifted and things are much better and easier now.”

The plans have been drawn up by Anders Roberts Cheer Architects. Their planning statement sent to the council said the building would have a “contemporary style”.

“It is considered that the overall design concept both removes a building considered monolithic and inappropriate with a building that enhances the area and contributes to the vitality and growth of the town,” it states.

The plans will be considered in due course.
