A PIANIST and singer who hit all the right notes at a party during the Second World War have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Reg Mears knew he’d met the girl for him the moment he first saw Doris back in 1943.

Their eldest child Angela Jones said: “My dad was invited to the party because he could play the piano and my mother was invited because she used to sing.

“My dad said the moment he saw her he knew he wanted to marry her.”

The happy couple tied the knot at the Holy Trinity Church in South Woodford, London, on September 16, 1944, and came to Bournemouth for their honeymoon.

Mrs Jones said: “They came on Honeymoon to Boscombe but at the time they couldn’t go on the beach because it was war time.”

The pair had two children, Angela and David, and returned to Dorset for family holidays over the years.

“As time went on they used to bring us down on holiday to Bournemouth and Poole,” Mrs Jones said.

“They made up their mind that when they retired they would move to Poole and that’s what they did.”

Reg, who worked as a meter engineer at the electricity board for 42 years, and Doris, who worked as a clerk at an insurance firm, moved to Poole nearly 30 years ago.

To celebrate the milestone anniversary the couple enjoyed a special dinner with loved ones.

Mrs Jones said: “They’ve had a lovely day.”

She added: “They bicker like mad, but they are both each other’s oldest and dearest friend.

“They’d be lost without each other.”
