WORKERS in Bournemouth are being urged to compete against each other in a cycling competition.

The second Momentum Challenge is a ‘free and fun’ competition aimed at getting as many employees as possible out and about on their bikes.

Anyone who works for a company based in Bournemouth can win prizes by riding for as little as 10 minutes between September 8-28.

Cllr Michael Filer, Bournemouth Borough Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We’re trying to encourage more people to cycle in and around Bournemouth as part of the town’s largest travel campaign.

“The Momentum Cycle Challenge is a fantastic way to get more people on their bikes, whether you’re new to cycling or already enjoy cycling for work or leisure purposes.

“I would encourage any Bournemouth employees to join the challenge and enjoy the benefits of riding a bike.”

The challenge works by participants encouraging friends and colleagues to join in.

Those taking part log their ride online at lovetoride.net and the team with the highest participation wins.

Those who encourage non-cyclists to take part will be rewarded with free cinema tickets.

Lee Reynolds, challenge manager for Bournemouth, said: “It’s fantastic to see Momentum returning to Bournemouth this year.

“The great thing about the challenge is that it’s not about how far or how often you cycle.

“You can ride whenever or wherever you like. And with some great prizes up for grabs, there’s no excuse not to get on your bike.”

The Momentum Cycle Challenge is part of the council’s efforts to promote sustainable travel, funded by a grant from the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

Last year’s event ran in May and June, with 665 people logging a ride and 3,689 trips made by participants.
