BOURNEMOUTH council has reiterated that new lifts will be installed at Pokesdown Railway Station by 2020.

Responding to public questions, cabinet member for regeneration Jane Kelly said that thanks to the efforts of Boscombe East ward councillor Andy Jones and his colleagues the borough had "secured a major success" on the issue.

"The rail franchise holder must introduce lifts at Pokesdown Station," she said.

"The requirement is that these be in place by February 2020, and the authority is already working with South Western Railways to ensure this is the case."

Campaigners have spent the last six years calling for the station's lifts to be restored, allowing more disabled people to use the station and sparing people with pushchairs and baggage the 44 steps up to street level.
