SURGEONS have removed a knife from a man's head after an alleged attack at the weekend.

Police were called to Ashley Road at its junction with South Road in Springbourne shortly after 6pm on Saturday after Ian Reilly, who is in his 50s, sustained the injury.

A 17-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder and possession of a metal kitchen knife in a public place on Sunday night.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before magistrates at a specially-convened youth court yesterday, Monday, January 9.

He has appeared before a judge at Winchester Crown Court today.

No pleas were entered at the brief hearing this morning and the boy is due to appear at Winchester again on Friday March 3. He was remanded to a young offenders' institute.

Mr Reilly remains in hospital recovering from the injury.

Doctors were forced to surgically remove the blade after it become embedded in his skull.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police are calling for a jogger who was in the area at the time of the incident to come forward.

Detective Constable Scott Brimicombe, of Bournemouth CID, said: “Following enquiries we understand a male jogger wearing florescent clothing was in the area and I believe they may have witnessed all or part of the incident."
