A DRIVER caught holding his phone in one hand and a sausage roll in the other was stopped by police on the Spur Road.

Officers from Dorset Police's No Excuses team stopped the vehicle on the A338 on Easter Monday. The driver told police he had been "cruising" with no hands on the wheel.

The motorist was one of a number stopped during the course of the day. Officers also spotted vehicles travelling at between 70 and 80 miles per hour in the 50 mile per hour stretch of the Wessex Way.

Eight vehicles were stopped as they were not covered by insurance. All drivers without appropriate insurance were given six points and a £300 fine.

Nine drivers were given tickets for offences including speeding, using a phone while driving, driving without an MOT and driving carelessly.

Two people were arrested after roadside drugs tests. Officers said one came to police's attention as his vehicle was not insured.

The second arrest for drug driving came after officers attempted to stop a car as the motorist wasn't wearing a seatbelt. However, the vehicle failed to stop when directed and the occupants of the car then ran away, leading police on a chase down to the beach where they were arrested in the sea.

Police say the driver was arrested for possession of cannabis, failing to stop for police and drug driving.
