A DRIVER asked police if she could use her phone at the wheel if she was making a call using WhatsApp.

Dorset Police’s No Excuse team saw the woman using her mobile near Pokesdown railway station on Thursday as part of Operation Dragoon.

In Charminster, another driver was stopped for using her phone at the wheel and going through a set of traffic lights. She was stopped and believed she could use the phone on loudspeaker while holding it in her hand.

Both woman were given six points and a £200 fine.

Officers also stopped a man who was driving a vehicle insured to a female. He told them he was borrowing his sister’s car for the day and believed he was a named driver on his mother’s car which would allow him to drive other vehicles third party.

This was not the case the vehicle was seized. He was given a traffic offence report for six points and £300.

A spokesperson for the No Excuse team said: “Please check if your policy allows you to drive other cars. If you are a named driver, you won't be allowed to.”

A man who was parked on the zig zags by a crossing, didn’t have insurance and had also been driving without a seatbelt also had his vehicle seized.

Police said he was reported for all three offences and will be going to court.

A third vehicle was seized, a moped, after the rider who was suspected of having no insurance ran away from police who were hoping to speak him.

The spokesperson said: “Not only did he leave his bike for us, but his house keys and lots and lots of finger prints over the bike that will be looked at.”
