A pensioner was arrested after an alleged attack on an elderly man in the toilet at Waitrose in Lymington.

Police and paramedics were called to reports of a 71-year-old man who had been assaulted in the men’s toilets at Waitrose on Stanford Road between 1pm and 1.20pm on Tuesday.

Having suffered head injuries which were not thought to have been life-threatening the victim was taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

A police spokesperson said the victim sustained cuts to his face and a black eye.

Later the same day, officers arrested a 72-year-old local man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He was later released but remains under investigation.
