A TEENAGER headbutted the manager of a motorcycle dealership and caused more than £1,000 worth of damage to two motorbikes.

Thomas Brown, aged 19, of Alder Road, Poole, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and assault at Poole Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court heard that Brown had gone to motorcycle dealership PooleMoto on September 13, last year, to try and sell back his moped after receiving a fine for a driving offence.

According to Brown, the manager Steve Dibbs "laughed in his face" which caused him to get agitated and then headbutt him.

Mr Dibbs was knocked to the ground as a result of the headbutt which caused bruising and swelling to his left eye.

Jason Spellman, defending, said Brown then attempted to leave the premises but Mr Dibbs followed him outside and took hold of his moped to stop him from leaving before the police arrived.

"The defendant then kicked the glass panel on the front of the shop causing it to crack," added Mr Spellman.

"He then damaged two motorbikes - snapping the wing mirror and indicator off one and hitting another with his helmet which caused the bracket to brake."

The court heard Brown caused more than £1,300 worth of damage to the bikes and more than £100 worth of damage to the window.

Speaking to the Echo Mr Dibbs, 55, said he had never experienced anything like that in all his years in business.

"He took me completely by surprise and when he headbutted me knocked me to the floor.

"He went completely berserk we just couldn't believe it."

Mike Flynn, defending, said: "He now realises the folly of his actions and accepts he lost it.

"He also accepts he has an issue with anger management and is making steps to cut down his use of cannabis which he used on a daily basis."

The court heard that two weeks after the incident Brown experienced a psychotic episode and was sectioned. A report from probation said that the offence occurred "at the breaking point of that episode".

Brown was due to appear at court on Friday, January 27 but did not show up. He was arrested and also charged with failure to attend court.

District Judge Stephen Nicholls Brown a 12-month community order and ordered to pay £1,625.51 compensation for the damage.

He was also given a four week curfew between 8pm and 7am every day.
