POLICE will hand out lights to cyclists this winter as part of a bike safety scheme.

Officers based in West Moors, Three Legged Cross and St Leonards and St Ives were awarded a grant through Police Mutual's 'force for good' programme.

The money was used to buy bicycle lights, which will be handed out to residents.

The 'think bright, think lights' project is particularly aimed at schoolchildren.

PCSO Adam Fitzwalter, who organises the initiative on behalf of the West Moors, St Leonards and St Ives Neighbourhood Policing Team, said officers also use a luminous orange promotional bicycle to make members of the public aware.

"It is important that cyclists keep themselves and others safe by using lights on their bicycles," he said.

Cyclists are legally required to use cycle lights when it's dark.

Failure to comply can result in a fine or court appearance.
