POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman’s handbag was snatched from her in New Milton late last night.

Officers say sometime between 10.05pm and 10.15pm, the victim, a 45-year-old woman, was walking along Caird Avenue into the Tesco car park when she was approached from behind by a man.

He ripped her handbag from her shoulder, causing her to fall over before running off in the direction of Lymington Road.

The bag was a black leather handbag and contained a pink chequered purse, which had a quantity of cash along with debit and credit cards.

Police say the victim was unhurt but left “very shaken” by the incident.

The man was described as about 5ft 10ins tall, medium build, wearing dark clothing and a hooded top.

A spokesman from Hampshire Police said: “Please remember to look after your personal safety and be aware of your surroundings when walking late at night. If possible walk with a friend, book a taxi or use public transport.

“When out on your own, don’t be tempted to take shortcuts through parks, alleys or subways. Stick to well-lit, busy streets.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is asked to call Hampshire Police on 101, quoting ref 44150163092, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
