POLICE were called to a disturbance in Parkstone this evening after two men allegedly assaulted an officer.

A witness reported seeing the men, one carrying a bottle, approach a police car pulled up in Lucas Road at around 6pm and begin shouting abuse.

"The officer got out of the car and was talking to them calmly, asking them to hand over the bottle," said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous.

"Somehow the officer managed to get the bottle off him, and both of them went for him."

She said the policeman used a defensive spray to ward the pair off, and was able to restrain one on the ground until support arrived in the form of a police van and three cars.

A Dorset Police spokesman confirmed an officer had responded to a report of anti-social behaviour in nearby Cromwell Road at around 5.45pm, and that two young men had attacked him.

"The officer received a few grazes and a chipped tooth," he said.

He said two men had been arrested and detained pending further enquiries.
