POLICE are searching for a man alleged to have hurled racist abuse at a Sherborne woman.

The local woman, in her 30s, was walking in Cheap Street when a man who was walking past allegedly became verbally aggressive and shouted racist abuse at her. The incident was said to have occurred at around 4pm last Friday, March 13.

The victim challenged the man about his behaviour, but told police he continued to be abusive before walking off. According to the force she managed to take a photo of the back of the suspect as he walked away.

The man was described as white, in his 70s, clean shaven and wearing glasses. He also used a walking stick.

Police Inspector Steve Marsh, of Sherborne police, said: "This was clearly a distressing incident for the victim. Although the photo does not show the suspect's face I would like to speak to anyone who may recognise his stance, build or clothing.

"We know two witnesses also came to the aid of the victim and the incident happened in a public place at a busy time of the day."

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 13:312, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
