MAJOR works to revitalise and improve road safety on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth are due to start on Monday.

As part of the government-funded Three Towns Travel scheme, the works will include the introduction of a 20mph zone, new crossings for pedestrians, more trees and seated areas, segregated cycle lanes and new cycle stands.

According to Bournemouth Borough Council, over the last 10 years there have been approximately 12 accidents at the junction with St Stephen’s Road, and nine along Richmond Hill.

It’s hoped the new layout will make the area safer for motorists and pedestrians and reduce the number of accidents in the area.

Councillor Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport, said: “We are delighted that through additional government funding we are able to make further improvements to another town centre site.

“The scheme at Richmond Hill will create a safer and more welcoming environment for the many visitors, commuters and shoppers who use this part of town. Keeping our town moving is a key priority and we are committed to reducing congestion. “By making these improvements we are providing people with more options for how they travel whilst supporting the local economy.”

Richmond Hill will remain open with the management of two-way traffic.

The council says all access to residential properties and local businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of the works.

Mike Holmes, service director for planning and transport, said: “Inevitably there will be some disruption during construction, however we have planned these works to make sure this is kept to a minimum for local residents, businesses and the travelling public.”

The scheme will also see a new loading bay in the existing lay-by on St Stephen’s Road and a new pick-up/drop-off and loading bay outside Richmond House. Three Towns Travel is a three-year multi-million programme, funded by central government, being implemented across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
