The most memorable breakfast I ever had was in California. Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, to be precise. On the advice of the very tactiel waitress, I ordered raspberry french toast ("they're intense", she said....) She wasn't lying. If I'd been diabetic I'd have been in a coma by the time I'd eaten half. French toast, sandwiched together with raspberries, smothered in maple syrup and icing sugar and served with a mountain of cream.
I couldn't eat it all of course, but crikey it was tasty.
So. Mothering Sunday. What better excuse to dig out some cholesterol-filled, coma-inducing, doctors-nightmare breakfasts? Cos nothing says "I love you Mum" better than a gobsmackingly tatsy, if really unhealthy, breakfast, right?
First up is this rhubarb coffeecake. We're just coming into rhubarb season, for the forced kind, anyway. Don't be confused by the name, this isn't a coffee-flavoured cake but a cake to have WITH coffee.
Don't fancy sweet? Try this eggs that pack a punch. To the uninitiated, huevos rancheros sounds more like lunch or dinner than breakfast, but there's not better spice-filled way to start your day.
If you don't think your Mum is man enough for the mexican, why not try this delicate fritatta instead. Full of herbs and light enough to leave room for lunch, it's the perfect brunch for a spring morning.
Or, try these feta and basil muffins. But only if you like savoury muffins. (I've never been sure I do.)
• Feta Roasted Red Pepper and Basil Muffins
This one is French Toast, but with a twist - you soak it the night before. So you can get up, whack it in the pan, and it's cooked by the time you've made the tea. Splendid.
And to finish, some tiny cupcakes. Not really breakfast material (although who I am to stop you) but they would make a brilliant present.
