THE lusted after gold statues have been handed out and what a night it was.
Most of the winners may not have been surprising, but it was a satisfying outcome.
The David and Goliath battle between Avatar and The Hurt Locker was set to be interesting and it didn’t disappoint, with the Academy seemingly choosing gritty substance over spectacle and imagination.
The Hurt Locker was the big winner of the night collecting six accolades including the big one, Best Picture – the indie film made just £9.9m at the box office in comparison to the record breaking Avatar, which raked in £1.32bn.
It’s rather astonishing to believe that we had to wait until 2010 and the 82nd Oscars for a woman to pick up the gong for Best Director, but Kathryn Bigelow finally did it – the fifth woman to be nominated for this category in the history of the Academy Awards.
An historic win and hopefully, many other women will go to enjoy the same success.
James Cameron didn’t walk away empty handed with Avatar winning Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique collected awards for their supporting roles in Inglorious Basterds and Precious.
It took Jeff Bridges five nominations, but he finally nailed an Oscar for Best Actor for Crazy Heart.
Sandra Bullock amusingly managed to bag a Razzie for her performance in All About Steve and an Oscar for Best Actress in The Blindside in the same week!
Surely it’s only a matter of time until someone wins both awards for the same film?!
